Ever have a makeup question that requires the expert guidance of a professional? Your prayers are answered. In our Ask a Makeup Artist series, celebrity makeup artist Wendy Rowe (who’s worked with Sienna Miller, Olivia Wilde, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, as well as fashion brands like Burberry) will tackle the burning beauty questions we all want the answers to.

How do I fill in my eyebrows and still make them look natural?

When you’re going for a natural brow, use either a powder with an angled brush or a brow pencil with an angled edge. Both will deliver the look you want, if you use the proper technique.

Fill in the shape using small brush strokes, going in the direction of the hair’s natural growth. Mimicking the actual growth pattern with light hair-like strokes will look more natural than simply following the shape. But don’t fill them in so much that you end up with a solid shape. Leaving slight gaps in the color will help the finished product resemble natural hair.

And the last piece of the natural-looking eyebrow puzzle is shade. Always go with a slightly lighter shade than your natural brow color. This will help the application look less solid. Blondes should look for a product with ash gray tones. And make sure you select a shade without any red undertones because red is an unnatural color that doesn’t wear well on eyebrows.
