The dreamy haze of a light London rainfall is hard to describe, unless you’ve experienced it firsthand—but Burberry is about to change that. Today, the brand launched its new fragrance, My Burberry ($125), and it’s the epitome of the line’s iconic trench in scent form. Allow us to explain.
First, the bottle—reminiscent of the signature honey-colored trench, the golden liquid is actually one of the three colors used in the brand’s Heritage Trench Coat collection. A luxurious, horn-finish cap mimics the instantly recognizable buttons of the brand’s iconic coat, and the hand-tied knot is English-woven gabardine—the same fabric invented by Thomas Burberry over 100 years ago.
Now, onto the scent. We were lucky enough to get one of these to preview, and were immediately blown away with the first sweet spritz, even more so by the lingering base notes a while later. The way the scent develops is like the temperament of a typical day in London. First, you get a whiff of sparkly sweet pea and bergamot—the city’s crisp, sunny morning. Then afternoon comes, and you’re greeted with warm heart notes of quince (a pear-like fruit) and fragrant freesia. Finally comes the evening rain—not a downpour, not a sprinkle, but somewhere in between. It wraps you up in a steady, patient sweep and leaves you with a feeling of vague wistfulness—this would be the scent’s base notes of rain-tipped damask, centifolia roses, and patchouli oil. A soon-to-be iconic scent, no doubt.
Speaking of iconic, Burberry also tapped two style icons to front their campaign—Cara Delevingne and Kate Moss, who have never been photographed together until now. Photographer Mario Testino trains his lens on Delevingne, with her winsome whimsy and striking features, who represents the effortlessly cool modern Brit, and Moss, with her timeless grace and hint of edge, who will forever live in a class of her own. The two of them together represent the universal appeal of this fragrance—a scent that isn’t bound by age, distance, or time.
